Resealable and compostable bags: reading the claims properly

Notes from the counter at Handbag Heaven in New York, NY.

Compostable and biodegradable are not synonyms

Biodegradable only means something will eventually break down, with no promise about how long or into what. Compostable is a defined standard with a time limit and a requirement that what remains is not toxic.

If a bag matters to you environmentally, the word to look for on the packaging is compostable, along with the standard it is certified to.

Home compostable versus industrial

Most compostable packaging is certified for industrial composting, which runs far hotter than a garden heap. Put it in a home bin and it may still be recognisable a year later.

Home compostable certification is a separate and rarer claim. Check which one a product carries before assuming it will disappear in the garden.

Resealable does not mean airtight

A press seal keeps contents contained and slows moisture exchange, but it is not the same as a vacuum seal. For anything that goes stale quickly, a press seal buys days rather than weeks.

For freezing, look for bags specifically rated for it — thin resealable bags become brittle at freezer temperatures and split.

Thickness is measured in mil

Bag thickness is quoted in mil, a thousandth of an inch. Sandwich bags sit around 1 mil, freezer bags nearer 2 to 4. A thicker bag resists punctures from bones and frozen edges.

Where a listing gives the figure it is worth comparing, because bags of identical dimensions can differ substantially in gauge.

Food contact matters

Not every bag sold in a kitchen aisle is rated for direct food contact, particularly coloured or printed ones. Where a bag is intended for food the listing will say so explicitly.

If it does not say, treat it as a storage bag rather than a food bag.

Reuse before recycling

A resealable bag washed and dried can serve many times over for dry goods, which beats both recycling and composting on impact. The limit is food safety: once a bag has held raw protein it should be retired.

For dry storage, though, a bag can reasonably last months.

Where this sits in the shop

Handbag Heaven groups its stock into 5 categories, so most of what is discussed above lives in one or two of them:

Browsing by category is usually quicker than searching, because the groups follow how the goods are actually used rather than how a supplier lists them.

The largest group at the moment is Kitchen and Household Bags with 2 items, and the smallest is Shoe and Travel Bags with 2. Those counts move as stock comes in and goes out, so they are worth checking rather than assuming.

From our shelves

A few items currently in stock that relate to this article:

Across the whole catalogue prices currently run from $4.99 to $68.74, with most of the range clustered around the middle of that span. Stock and prices on the product pages are live, so they are the figures to trust rather than anything quoted in an article.

Ordering, delivery and returns

Free US shipping on orders over $49; a flat $6.95 below that. Orders are picked and packed at the New York store on business days, and a tracking number follows by email once the carrier scans the parcel.

If something is not right, there are 30 days from delivery to send it back unused and in its packaging. The full detail is on the Shipping Policy and Returns and Refunds pages, and the FAQ covers the questions that come up most.

How we decide what to stock

Handbag Heaven carries reusable bags, totes and everyday carry, and the range is deliberately narrower than a warehouse catalogue. A line earns its place by being asked for repeatedly at the counter in New York and by coming back without complaints — not by having the widest margin.

When something stops meeting that bar it comes off the shelf rather than being discounted until it moves. That is why the catalogue on this site changes slowly and why the specification tables on the product pages quote the maker rather than our own marketing.

Quick answers

Are the tote bags washable?

The cotton and non-woven totes can be washed cold and air dried. Check the specifications table on each product page — where the maker states a wash method, we list it there.

What does shipping cost?

Free US shipping on orders over $49; a flat $6.95 below that. Everything ships from the New York store.
